Featured Pet: Kahlua

Kahlua has had quite the life prior to becoming a part of the OC family! Her story starts in North Carolina where she was found tied out to a foreclosed home. After being found, Kahlua made her way to Connecticut where she was in and out of homes for a year, mainly due to her reactivity around other dogs, and was never able to find her perfect match. To make matters worse, she was diagnosed with Mast Cell tumors on her rear and back leg. This sweetie was in dire need for a stable environment where she could receive the medical care and love she rightfully deserved!

Almost immediately to her arrival to the Sanctuary, Kahlua instantly made friends with everyone she met! She loves greeting people at the door with a happy wag of the tail and a slobbery kiss! She’s known for her infamous move of backing up her behind and sitting directly in front of you, which always got her a good back scratch! People of all ages get to enjoy the company of this kind soul during our Public Hours where she gets to welcome everyone to the Sanctuary.

Once settled, the next thing was to assess her medical condition. Kahlua had every lump and bump tested and eventually had surgery to remove the tumors, specifically the one on her leg. After her removal surgery, she got the all clear. With her medical diagnosis at bay, Kahlua received plenty of positive reinforcement training to help her focus on her person rather than on other dogs and distractions. Kahlua graduated from our Family Companions 1 class and even participates in group walks with her other Sanctuary roommates. As long as her space is respected and her person is by her side, Kahlua keeps her cool!

Even with her laid-back, gentle demeanor inside, Kahlua also enjoys the great outdoors! Whether she’s sniffing out scents with her cute snoot or on the look-out for some creepy critters, she has a blast wherever she goes! Even at nine years old, this petite Great Dane hasn’t slowed down one bit! She’s been known at the Sanctuary to catch a critter (…or two…or three) quicker than you can blink! She loves being a goof ball with her human friends, rolling in the grass and feeling completely care-free!

We’re so happy we can give Kahlua the time and environment to flourish, but it’s time for her to continue thriving with a family and home! This polite, mellow girl would appreciate to be the only pet in her new home where she can relax and have her people all to herself! Kahlua would also appreciate a fenced in yard where she can stretch her long legs and have plenty of play time fun with her family!
