A Special Thank You – April Sanctuary Update

We had quite the month of ups and downs here at the sanctuary: adorable arrivals, great adoptions, and a couple of hard losses. In the same way that we never get tired of big wins with meaningful rescues and perfect adoptions, the loss of cherished guests never gets easier either. But I want to thank you all, our volunteers, donors, and supporters, for your dedication to our mission and for believing in what we do.

But what I really want to talk about this month is a special team of supporters that are a huge piece of us being able to do what we do here. April 27th was World Veterinary Day, and the Our Companions Sanctuary has some of the best veterinary partners any animal care group could ask for. First and foremost, I want to send a huge, heartfelt thank you to Dr. Laurie Brown and her intrepid vet tech, Ashlee O’Rourke. Many of you may have seen their vet van here not only on their regular Thursday morning visits, but at all kinds of odd days and times when our furry friends find themselves in need of some special care. Whether it’s an urgent visit to check out Hedwig when he was unexpectedly found on our doorstep, or fitting in numerous visits week after week to support injured Atlas through yet another healing ordeal, this terrific team is always there with a smile making every effort to keep these dogs and cats happy and healthy. And even when it means having to call them in for the heartbreaking business of helping one of our residents to their final rest, they always show how much they care about our critters and are willing to work for what’s best for them.

Of course, there are times when our veterinary needs go into the realm that only a full veterinary hospital can handle. That’s when we head for Bolton Veterinary Hospital. From Zuzu’s knee surgery, to Dobby’s heartworm treatment, to (once again) Atlas’s many medical needs, the team at Bolton Vet always provides the best care we could ask for. And even though they may only see our dogs and cats for one or two short stays, our critters never leave there without some extra ear scratches or hugs and loving wishes for a great future home.

And then there’s those times when we need to move outside the box of more traditional veterinary care. That’s when we call on the skills of Dr. Amy Matthews. From acupuncture and chiropractic care to Chinese herbal remedies, Dr. Amy has made a huge impact in the lives of so many of our pets, including (yet again) Atlas’s pain management and Jasper’s seizure control.

The veterinary teams who care for our sanctuary residents are an amazing and caring bunch and we couldn’t make our vision of animal care a reality without their support. So I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them all. And I’d also like to remind all of you to take a moment to thank all the veterinary teams that keep your furry families happy and healthy. It’s a tough job and they deserve all of our appreciation.

As many of you know, it’s been a busy month with many happy moments, and a few tough ones. We had to say goodbye to two of our senior, long term residents whose health had declined rapidly. Carl and Licorice were favorites who made a big impact on us all during their time here. But at least we know that we were able to give them the best care possible, and a comfortable and loving space to live out their days.

In happier news, we had lots of cats find their furever homes in April. Sheba, one of our long term seniors, along with newcomers Morpheus and Leonard went home this month. And arriving in our care were Ethel, Gator, Lorraina, and the kitten trio of Buttercup, Gizmo, and Rasputin.

And returning to us once again on the dog side of things is Henry, a senior, blind beagle who stayed with us a few years ago.
