Our Companions was contacted by a woman planning her move to college and was unable to take her new pet rats. With an empty rat habitat, we were able to add the two wonderful rats to our Sanctuary family at the end of July. The two were adopted at separate times but lived together, and we are told they lived well with additional rats in the past. Although they aren’t littermates, rats are very social creatures (with one another and with us people!) and we hope to keep them together if they continue to get along.
Welcome Wanda and Winnie! Wanda is the brown and white cutie, estimated to be 4 months old, while Winnie is all white. You’ll notice Winnie has a light, wavy coat and curly whiskers! Our Small Animal Team did some research and suspect she might be a “double rex”, which is a type of rat with a unique, curly, and often patchy coat due to carrying two copies of the rex gene. As they get older, their fur does tend to break off and become barer. But for now, both rats are doing well, exploring their exciting new set up, and taking their time getting to know their new Sanctuary friends.
