Summer Break – July Sanctuary Update

Hi Everyone!

What a summer we’re having! It’s definitely been a challenge for everyone at the sanctuary, regardless of species. And if you’ve been following these updates over the years, you’ll know that this is my least favorite time of year. I’m definitely a winter/fall person, not a spring/summer one. All of this whining on my part brings me to the matter at hand. As has become my custom for the last few years, I’m taking this month’s update off and just sharing a ton of cute pictures of summer life at the sanctuary: dogs playing in the water, cats rolling in the grass, and little critters just being adorable. I hope you enjoy it and I’ll catch up with you again in September!

Like many youngsters, our big puppy Coal loves bubbles
Missy cools off in her backyard pool at Chelsea House
Scout knows how to beat the heat with his hose time
Champ’s preferred cool-down activity often involves a rushing river
Eddy taking advantage of his new splash pad
Frodo enjoying searching for snacks in our homemade ball pit
Niles ventures “outside” on a warm summer day
Nothing says summer like a little roll in the grass, Neptune demonstrates
GeeBee out in the yard – now that’s a happy cat!
Sizzle enjoying some indoor playtime
Cider celebrated Independence Day in style
Daisy catching a summer breeze
Two buns chillin on a hot summer day
Willow & Nimbus made some new friends this summer
No matter the weather, our hams are always having fun in their custom habitats
Lucien may be trying to hitch a ride outside to enjoy the summer weather…
Coffee taking it easy – it’s not easy being so adorable!
Charley the chinchilla wishes a happy birthday to all the summer babies!
Honorable mention to the juvenile eagle who has been hanging around this month!

And I’d like to send out a big thank you this month to Courtney! Not only is she a talented dog handler and a caring and hard working part of the team, she’s the creative force behind all of the pictures and visuals in these updates every month. Her eye for flair and dedication to creating effective messaging makes these updates the little slice of joy that they are! Thank you so much, Courtney!!

Vinny’s View

Wow! This is quite the place you all have here!! For those of you who haven’t met me yet, my name is Vinny and I’m new here. And I must say, I am enjoying myself quite a bit. Several weeks ago, things weren’t looking great for me. Outside and alone, and not feeling well at all, I found myself negotiating life in amongst a group of outdoor cats. It was rough and was definitely not the life I was used to. Lucky for me, a gentle woman who was caring for these outdoor cats noticed that I didn’t belong there and took me inside. She got help and got me some basic care, and the next thing I knew, I was here in this wonderful place. Quiet and comfortable with special people around who not only make sure that I’m well fed and healthy, but also let me know that I’m wanted and respected just the way I am. Just the way I am started out as hiding under furniture whenever there wasn’t a meal available, but with a little time and patience, I found some more comfy spots to spend my time, like this great big warm couch. It’s been an amazing journey and I’m so grateful to be here, meeting new generous people every day. And I’m looking forward to meeting more of you soon.

Catch you later!

Vinny

Goodbye, Charlotte

We had another tough loss on the cat team this month. Charlotte arrived here just a short time ago, and was in serious need of our help. She was blind and had impaired hearing, and was struggling with advanced kidney disease. The team immediately rallied to her aid, working to find how we could make her as comfortable as possible. We adjusted her room setup, her feeding station, and her handling parameters in order to help her adjust and know that she was loved. Unfortunately, her health continued to decline and we reached the point where it was time to let her go. She made a big impression in a short amount of time here and she will be greatly missed. Rest well, Charlotte.

And of Course…Adoptions!!

Another slow summer month, but we’ve still managed some solid adoption action. On the cat side, our three legged, big hearted Spence went home, and we welcomed in Kiwi and perfect pairs Indie & Sizzle and Mickey & Minnie. In small animals, Gabriel, Poppy, and little Orpheus went home this month. And we were able to bring in some more rats with Wanda and Winnie!

Welcome, Indie & Sizzle!
Welcome, Kiwi!
Welcome, Minnie!
Welcome, Mickey!
Welcome, Wanda!
Welcome, Winnie!
Good luck, Spence!
Good luck, Gabriel!
Good luck, Poppy!
Good luck, Orpheus!

Thank you all so much for whatever way you support us and our mission. We couldn’t do it without you.
