Rehoming Program

If you are considering rehoming your dog due to medical or behavioral challenges in the home, please contact our Helpline by phone at 860-242-9999 or email [email protected] as we have a variety of programs that may be able to assist with your situation.

Our goal at Our Companions is keeping pets and people together. However, when that is not possible, we offer our Rehoming Program where your pet stays in your home while we search for their next home.

Our Rehoming Program aims to keep your pet in their current living situation, while we utilize our resources, media platforms, and marketing partnerships to find a suitable adopter and home that will best meet their needs.

Your pet will move from your home to their next home, rather than moving to a shelter. This reduces stress for the pet and helps with the transition process for pets as they settle into their new life.

Our Rehoming Program currently welcomes cats, rabbits, birds, and many more small animals. This program best serves the Connecticut and southern Massachusetts area and does not have a long-distance option.

Once your pet is accepted into our Rehoming Program, your pet will be entered into our Adoption Program. An adoption counselor will be in touch with you to learn more about your pet, discuss what type of home/adopter would be best, and inform you of next steps in our program.

Cat Rehoming Program

To participate in our Cat Rehoming Program, you'll need to:

Have reliable transportation for adoption meetings and vet appointments
Keep the cat(s) in safe and indoors until a new home is found.
Provide recent photos for promotion. Videos are welcome too. (Click here for examples)
Cover the cost of veterinary care. To join the program, the following veterinary care is required ahead of time:

1. Cat be spayed or neutered
2. Current with Rabies and Distemper vaccines
3. Have an FIV/FeLV test within the last six months, with written results
4. Treatment for fleas, worms and ear mites
5. For cats 10 years of age and older, a senior blood panel with T4 is also required

Once we receive your completed Cat Assistance Request, a member of our team will reach out within 3 to 4 business days to discuss next steps.

Small Animal Rehoming Program

To participate in the Small Animal Rehoming Program, you'll need to:

Have reliable transportation for adoption meetings and vet appointments
Keep the pet(s) safely indoors until they are adopted.
Provide recent photos. videos are great too. (Click here for examples)
To support successful placement and ensure the health and well-being of animals entering the Rehoming Program, a current veterinary wellness exam is required prior to acceptance for all species, with the exception of small rodents. In addition to an exam, the species below will need the following services:
- Rabbits – Spay/Neuter and RHDV vaccine (including booster)
- Ferrets – Current rabies vaccination
- Guinea Pigs – Males to be neutered, if young and healthy

After we receive your Small Animal Assistance Request, a member of our team will reach out within 3 to 4 business days to review next steps.
