Toddler

The toddler (1-3 years) segment teaches parents important differences in child/dog communication. Learning to recognize when their dog is becoming anxious is key to taking appropriate action quickly, especially once toddlers become mobile. “As far as toddlers go, dogs can be a potential landmine,” says Vincent. “Toddlers introduce a whole new level of unusual human behavior.” Joyner agrees but warns of the dangers relating to children of any age who are on the move: “It’s unpredictable. A screaming child running through the house can be a very stressful experience for a dog.” For this reason, the home management systems discussed in the pre-baby/infant program are even more essential during this phase.
