As many of you have recently read, Our Companions was recently involved in the rescue of 10 cats that were left behind when a New Britain woman died. We took the case on with great hope that we could save each and every life. And we did just that. However, when we had a volunteer veterinarian from Compassionate Care Animal Center come to the home to vaccinate, test and perform check ups, we found ourselves in a much more difficult situation than originally expected.
Eight of the ten cats had horrifically neglected mouths and were in need of immediate dental surgery, extraction and other medical care. These cats were wailing in pain, gums were swollen and red with teeth hanging on by threads. Each surgery costing approximately $400, combined with other necessary medical care, testing and medication brought the vet bills close to $5,000.
Forgetting about these cats and turning our back to their needs was not an option. We had to act fast. Even though kitten season was fast approaching - a time when every sterilization dollar is crucial, we utilized funds to cover the cost and we moved forward with the surgeries. Thankfully, all 10 cats are doing great and 8 have already found their forever home.
Cases like this, when suddenly a large number of cats are in need of rescue, are not new to Our Companions. Last year we had a case of 10 cats in West Hartford and 25 cats in Seymour. We also just rushed in to rescue 8 cats abandoned on an Ashford road who needed vetting, boarding and care and have another call for 6 cats in Southington.
Due to the growing need for us to get involved in these types of abandonment cases, in addition to our Annual Fund, Our Companions has created the Feline Fur-Get-Me-Not Fund , which will specifically provide financial resources to aid abandoned cats.
We know the next case is right around the corner and we want to plan so we can continue to help with these cases while preserving our funds for our other life-saving programs.
Please read the sidebar on what you can do to help or simply click here to make a donation online. Please choose the other field and enter Fur-get-me-not fund on the reference line.
On behalf of the cats who urgently need our care, I thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness.
