Sanctuary Construction

Tour the Sanctuary

In 2006 we launched our “Groundbreaking Campaign” to raise the funds to demolish the existing structures on the Ashford site. These unusable buildings, (once an industrial egg farm that housed over 100,000 laying hens) will be razed to make room for the sanctuary. It’s no small irony that the site where hundreds of thousands of animals suffered, will be transformed into a life-saving refuge for needy pets.

Thanks to over 35 donors, including the donation of demolition services by an anonymous corporate donor, we successfully raised the funds to complete the demolition- the critical first step in this project.

This year we have launched the campaign to raise $600,000 which will construct our first rescue cottage.   To learn more about our Home for Good campaign and to see detailed plans on our upcoming Rescue Cottage, click here (PDF, 6.6 MB).

We invite you to join us on a tour as we unveil our exciting plans for a brighter future.

If, in the meantime, you would like more information about this exciting project please email Susan Linker at susanl@ourcompanions.org or call her at (860) 242-9999, extension 1.

Ashford Demolition Update

For the last few months, our demolition contractor has been hard at work taking down the remaining buildings on the Ashford site. Three large chicken coops and the egg processing plant, once the largest buildings in all of Ashford, are now piles of debris.

The debris on the site includes:

  • More than 1,800 cubic yards of wood
  • 800 cubic yards of scrap metal
  • 10,000 cubic yards of concrete

This material has a future, though. Like the animals that will have their spirits renewed in Ashford at Our Companions Domestic Animal Sanctuary, the debris will also experience a renewal, used for construction on the site or recycled for use elsewhere.

The process of recycling wood, concrete and scrap metal is a major undertaking. First, the material is separated into piles. Next, the wood will be put through a large grinder for transportation to an incinerator where it will be burned for fuel.

The concrete, once used for the buildings' foundations, will be crushed and pulverized into usable pieces for construction clean fill and to reinforce the dam in Harakly's Pond.

The scrap metal has also been salvaged and will eventually be recycled.

Although this process is time consuming, recycling all the material will ultimately save on construction costs and is the right thing to do for the environment.
